Market update : 23rd April

The BSE Sensex today zoomed up on strong buying support and ended the day at 11199, up by 382 points (3.5 %). The Nifty ended the day at 3424 up by 93.40 points (2.8 %). The BSE midcap and smallcap indices underperformed the Sensex with gains of 1.48 % and .98 % respectively. The rally was led by stocks in the Metal, Auto and realty sectors. Apart from the BSE FMCG sectoral index which rose by .08 %, all the other sectoral indices clocked more than 2 % gain in today’s trade.

The major gainers at the Sensex were Wipro, Tata Steel and Maruti Suzuki. Wipro rose by 14 % during the day to end at 320.The losers in today’s trade at the Sensex were Sun pharma and HUL which fell by.3 % and.5 % respectively. Among other stocks TVS motors zoomed up by28 %.Gwalior Chemicals and Austral coke also rose by more than 20 % in today’s trade. 

Asian markets also ended higher today. Hang Seng was up by 2.26 % and Nikkei rose by 1.37%. The Shanghai and Taiwan indices closed flat. The European markets were having a mixed day. The CAC was trading up by 7 points whereas the DAX was down by 9 points. The Indian rupee was trading at 50.20 Rs per us $.
